The Imperial Household Agency on Aug. 18 started sharing updates about Crown Prince Fumihito’s family and other members of the imperial family through its official Instagram account.

“We will constantly test new ideas to improve the content of our information, so that more and more people will take interest in it,” said Shunsuke Sakamoto, head of the agency’s public relations department.

The agency opened its Instagram page in April last year under the account ID “kunaicho_jp.” Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako were the main focus at the time.

The agency decided to feature other imperial family members on Aug. 18, when the account had 2.06 million followers. The only exceptions are Emperor Emeritus Akihito and Empress Emerita Michiko, both of whom have already withdrawn from official duties.

According to the agency, photos, videos and news about Naruhito and Masako are uploaded as early as the same day.

Reports on other family members will be made available together about once a month.

Details of the solo activities of Princess Aiko, daughter of Naruhito and Masako, will be included in the periodic report on the emperor and the empress posted monthly on the social media site.

Information on Fumihito, Crown Princess Kiko, their second daughter, Princess Kako, and their eldest son, Prince Hisahito, will be provided all together.

The updates on the three families of Hitachinomiya, Mikasanomiya and Takamadonomiya will similarly be bundled for uploading.

On Aug. 18, a family photo of Fumihito taken in July combined with images of the other families taken between June and July were posted on Instagram.
