Yuri, the cherished pet dog of the imperial family, passed away on June 23 from old age, the family’s aides announced. She was 16.

Aides said the family is deeply saddened by her passing, especially Princess Aiko, who grew up with her.

Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako adopted the mixed-breed dog through a veterinary clinic in 2009 before he ascended the throne. Their daughter, Aiko, was 7 at the time and named her.

Treated as a beloved member of the family, Yuri lived at the imperial residence in Tokyo and often joined the family on private retreats.

During Aiko’s early difficult days in elementary school, Yuri even accompanied her on her morning commute, providing support and encouragement.

The friendly dog also played a special role in animal-assisted therapy activities before the COVID-19 pandemic by visiting hospitals in Tokyo. This included pediatric wards where she brought comfort and joy to young patients.

In her final years, Yuri spent more time resting quietly at home. On the evening of June 23, she passed away peacefully, surrounded by the imperial family.

Aides said that the family expressed heartfelt gratitude to those who supported and loved Yuri throughout her long life.
