HIROSHIMA—An unexploded bomb possibly left from a wartime supply depot was discovered on one of Hiroshima University's campuses in the prefectural capital's Minami Ward on May 13, forcing classes to be canceled.
At around 10:20 a.m., a worker called police to report that “an undetonated bomb-like object came out of the ground during demolition work” at the campus.
According to the Hiroshima prefectural police’s Hiroshima Minami Police Station, the object found at the institute's Kasumi campus was approximately 90 centimeters long and 25 cm in diameter.
The Ground Self-Defense Force's unexploded ordnance disposal unit is investigating whether there is any danger of an explosion.
Hiroshima University Hospital, which is located at the Kasumi campus, said the object was discovered at a School of Pharmaceutical Sciences lecture building-turned demolition site.
As of 12:30 p.m., the hospital was operating as usual, but afternoon classes at the university’s Kasumi Campus had been canceled.
Entry is also restricted in the area near the site.
According to the Hiroshima University Museum, the campus was the location of a former Imperial Japanese Army ordnance supply depot where weapons and ammunition were stored.
The site sits in a residential area about 2 kilometers south of JR Hiroshima Station.
