OSAKA--A man from Tokyo was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after he deliberately drove his car into a group of elementary school pupils here on May 1, police said.
According to the Osaka City Board of Education, seven children from Senbon Elementary School were injured and taken to emergency rooms: four second-grade boys and one girl, and two third-grade boys.
They were all said to be conscious.
The principal of Senbon Elementary School said one child was bleeding from the head.
The driver, Yuki Yazawa, 28, from Higashi-Murayama city in Tokyo, has been arrested.
“I was fed up with everything, so I drove my car trying to kill someone,” an investigator quoted the unemployed suspect as saying. “I tried to hit and kill several elementary school students.”
At 1:35 p.m., a passer-by made an emergency call that “some children were run over by a car” on a street in Osaka’s Nishinari Ward.
Around that time, morning classes had ended for all grades at the school, and the children were heading home after lunch.
The incident occurred near Senbon Elementary School about 500 meters southwest of Kishinosato Station on the Osaka Metro’s Yotsubashi Line.
