More heavy snow fell in prefectures facing the Sea of Japan as well as in the northern Kinki region on Feb. 23.

The winter pressure pattern is expected to strengthen through Feb. 24, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

It warned of likely traffic disruptions and cautioned residents to remain vigilant to the dangers of accumulated snow tumbling from the roofs of buildings.

Snowfall for the 24-hour period to 1 p.m. on Feb. 23 reached 34 centimeters in Tadami, Fukushima Prefecture, the agency said.

The corresponding figure for Kaneyama in Fukushima Prefecture, and Nagai in Yamagata Prefecture was 28 cm. Uonuma in Niigata Prefecture recorded 26 cm of snow.

The 24-hour snowfall amounts expected by 6 a.m. on Feb. 24 in mountainous areas include 50 cm along the Sea of Japan coast of the Tohoku region and the northern Kinki region, 70 cm in Niigata Prefecture and 30 cm in Yamaguchi Prefecture.

Heavy snow is expected through the evening of Feb. 24, even in low-lying areas of the central Kinki region, where it rarely happens.

Transportation may be affected, the agency said.
