“Black Box Diaries” directed by journalist Shiori Ito is up for Oscar consideration in the Documentary Feature Film category at the 97th Academy Awards.
The title has also been shortlisted in the Documentary category at the 78th British Academy Film Awards. The winner will be announced on Feb. 16.
The film follows Ito after she went public about having been raped by a TV reporter.
The director has been embroiled in a legal spat with a lawyer who represented her in a civil lawsuit due to alleged unauthorized use of imagery and audio in the film, including security camera footage showing an intoxicated Ito being taken into a hotel room.
According to producers, it remains unclear whether the film will be shown in Japan.
“Magic Candies” directed by Daisuke Nishio received an Oscar nomination in the Animated Short Film category.
The awards ceremony will be held in Los Angeles on March 2.
