“Bling-Bang-Bang-Born” by the hip-hop duo Creepy Nuts is the most-streamed song in Japan and the most streamed by a Japanese artist internationally, according to Spotify’s 2024 rankings.
This is the first time that a single song has held both top spots.
Since its release in January, “Bling-Bang-Bang-Born” has surpassed 300 million streams, Spotify said.
And although such feats were unheard of just a few years ago, an increasing number of songs by Japanese artists have been exceeding 100 million streams.
Pop singer Lisa’s “Gurenge” (red lotus), released in 2019, was the first song by a Japanese artist to hit this milestone in 2020, and only a few other Japanese songs followed suit at the time.
But since then, the appeal of Japanese music has grown significantly. In last year and this year alone, more than 100 songs have surpassed 100 million streams.
Noriko Ashizawa, head of music planning and promotion at Spotify Japan, believes that “the surge in hits is largely driven by the growing international reach of Japanese music.”
The most-streamed artist in Japan was the rock band Mrs. Green Apple for the second consecutive year, while the most-streamed Japanese artist overseas was the pop duo Yoasobi for the fourth straight year.
Globally, Sabrina Carpenter’s “Espresso,” was the most-played song, surpassing 1.6 billion streams, while Taylor Swift claimed the top spot for most-streamed artist overall for the second straight year.
Spotify says its music streaming service is used by more than 640 million people worldwide.
