Hoshino Resorts Inc. renamed its Tanigawadake Ropeway service on Mount Tanigawadake on Dec. 1 in a shift away from the “rustic” image of the area.
The new name is Tanigawadake Joch, the hotel and resort site operating company said.
“Joch” is the German word for col, a depressed area along a ridge.
The ropeway carries visitors up to the ski slopes on the 1,977-meter-high Mount Tanigawadake, which straddles Gunma and Niigata prefectures.
“‘Ropeway’ gives an image of a rugged mountain,” a company official said. “But we’d like to tell people there are various ways to enjoy the mountain, such as viewing the beautiful scenery and riding bicycles.”
The company has operated the ropeway and the Tenjindaira ski resort on the mountain since March 2022. The Tenjindaira station on the ropeway course is located in the col of the mountain ridge.
The company has also changed the ski resort’s name to Mt. T.
Since 80 percent of the slopes are suitable for experienced skiers, the official said the company wants to describe the mountain as a place where non-skiers can also fully enjoy the powder snow.
It also wanted a name that can be easily remembered and embraced by inbound tourists.
