New Yorkers will soon be able to bathe in a traditional onsen experience, as Hoshino Resorts Inc. has announced it will open a Japanese-style inn with a spa in Sharon Springs, New York, in 2028.

This will mark the first time a Japanese hotel company opens a traditional ryokan inn featuring hot spring baths in the United States, according to the company’s announcement on Oct. 17.

“Establishing a foothold in North America, the center of the global hotel industry, is crucial for our long-term business strategy,” said Hoshino Resorts CEO Yoshiharu Hoshino.

Referring to the unsuccessful attempts by Japanese hotel companies to enter the North American market during the Japanese asset bubble in the late 1980s, Hoshino added, “I believe that our onsen ryokan, which reflects Japanese culture, will be well-received in the overseas market.”

Located approximately 3.5 hours north of New York City by car, Sharon Springs is a historic spa town that has been attracting visitors since the 19th century.

The area was originally used by Native Americans for its mineral springs and later developed into a popular resort destination.

Hoshino Resorts selected Sharon Springs from among several candidates due to its abundant hot spring resources and similar climate to Japan.

The company plans to target American customers, particularly those living in New York City. The ryokan’s name, the number of rooms and other details have yet to be finalized.

Hoshino Resorts currently operates 72 properties worldwide, including hotels, ryokan and ski resorts in Japan, Guam, Bali and other destinations.
