Daihachi Yoshida’s “Teki Cometh” took home the Tokyo Grand Prix award as well as the best director and best actor awards at the 37th Tokyo International Film Festival that wrapped up on Nov. 6.
This is the third time that Japanese films won the annual event’s top prize following Shinji Somai’s “Typhoon Club” and Kichitaro Negishi’s “What the Snow Brings.”
The best director award went to a Japanese director for the second year in a row.
Five films were submitted from Chinese-speaking regions, including Taiwan and Hong Kong.
Together with three Japanese titles, East Asian works made up the majority of the 15 films in competition at the Tokyo festival.
Of seven prizes given to competition films, two were claimed by Chinese movies. The Award for Best Artistic Contribution went to Dong Zijian’s “My Friend An Delie,” while the Audience Award was handed to Yang Lina’s “Big World.”
The Kurosawa Akira Award went to Japanese director Sho Miyake and Taiwanese filmmaker Fu Tien-yu.
