The Imperial Household Agency announced on the morning of Oct. 8 that the surgery to repair the broken femur that Empress Emerita Michiko suffered in a fall has been successful.
According to the agency, Michiko, 89, underwent osteosynthesis surgery that morning at the University of Tokyo Hospital.
She has regained consciousness and is resting after the surgery, during which she was anesthetized.
Michiko is expected to remain in the hospital for one to two weeks for observation while she recovers through physical therapy.
Emperor Emeritus Akihito was scheduled to visit her in the afternoon and hear from the doctors about how her surgery went.
Michiko was injured on the evening of Oct. 6 when she lost her balance and fell at the Sento Imperial Residence within the grounds of the Akasaka Estate in Tokyo’s Minato Ward.
An examination on Oct. 7 revealed that she had broken the upper part of her right femur.
Michiko previously underwent surgery to remove breast cancer in 2019. She will turn 90 on Oct. 20.
