CHIBA--East Japan Railway Co. (JR East) announced it will accept orders and payments via smartphones to deliver local cuisine and souvenirs from Choshi in Chiba Prefecture.
The service involving the network’s Chiba Branch Office will start Aug. 3.
Ordered items will be brought to Choshi Station and elsewhere so passengers can enjoy the dishes on board the Shiosai limited express train bound for Tokyo.
Dishes and souvenirs are mainly sold on some Saturdays, Sundays and holidays. Reservations are accepted from one and a half months in advance until 9:30 a.m. on the day of travel.
Four food items will be offered for preorders.
A seafood bowl prepared with seven to eight kinds of fresh seafood, including fish unloaded at Choshi Fishing Port, sells for 2,000 yen ($12.80), including tax.
A set of fish and chips served with craft beer costs 1,600 yen.
A set of two bottles of locally produced soy sauce and “hishio” fermented soy paste, a local specialty of Choshi, sells for 920 yen. It is available for pick-up only at the Choshi tourist information center.
Orders will be accepted at JR East’s EeeE Choshi website at (https://www.jreast.co.jp/multi/en/maas/eeeechoshi/).
The service is also available for non-Shiosai passengers.
