The Japan Meteorological Agency is advising people to take extra precautions against landslides and flooding in low-lying areas on the Pacific side of eastern Japan on June 18 due to expected heavy rain.

A seasonal rain front accompanied by a low-pressure system is likely to cause heavy rainfall from noon to night that day in the affected areas.

As of 11 a.m. on June 18, heavy rain warnings have already been issued for some areas in Kanagawa Prefecture.

According to the JMA, rainfall is expected to peak in the Tokai region by midday and in the Kanto-Koshin region by night on June 18.

The amount of rainfall during the 24 hours through 6 a.m. on June 19 is up to 250 millimeters in Tokai, 200 mm in both Kanto-Koshin and the Shikoku regions, and 150 mm in the Kinki region.

In western Japan where the rain started falling from the night of June 17, the skies are expected to gradually clear.

On the morning of June 18, moist air flowed into a low-pressure system that was causing the seasonal rain front, unleashing heavy downpours from Okinawa to the Kinki region.

The maximum amount of rain during three hours at 10 a.m. was 131.5 mm in Umaji village, Kochi Prefecture; 122.0 mm in Tonaki village, Okinawa Prefecture; 112.0 mm in Naka town, Tokushima Prefecture; 112.0 mm in Tanabe, Wakayama Prefecture; and 105.0 mm in Ebino, Miyazaki Prefecture.
