Date city in Fukushima Prefecture on June 12 recorded the hottest temperature in Japan so far this year as a high pressure system caused the mercury to reach 30 degrees around the nation.

The temperature hit 35.2 degrees at 1:55 p.m. in Date, marking the first time in 2024 for a daily high to top 35 degrees, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.

At 254 locations around the country, maximum temperatures reached at least 30 degrees as of 1 p.m., the agency said.

In central Tokyo, the heat rose to 30.1 degrees at 1:39 p.m. It was the first time this year for 30-degree weather in the capital.
