A power outage hit almost every area of Miyakojima island in Okinawa Prefecture on April 25, affecting around 25,500 households, hospitals, schools and government services.

Electricity was restored at 11:42 a.m. throughout the island, according to Okinawa Electric Power Co.

Power had returned to some areas at around 7:20 a.m. but was again cut off a few minutes later.

The company said the outage started at around 3:10 a.m. for some unknown reason. The utility set up an accident recovery task force and is inspecting a power plant, transmission lines and other related facilities on the island.

Okinawa Prefectural Miyako Hospital and Miyakojima Tokushukai Hospital have decided to suspend outpatient care for the entire day and are only accepting emergency patients.

According to police, almost all traffic lights on the island were not working, and officers were directing traffic at major intersections.

The Miyako branch of the Driver’s License Center said services would be suspended until power is restored.

Classes at all 16 elementary schools and 11 junior high schools in the city were held as usual, according to the Miyakojima City Board of Education.

However, water supplies were reportedly unavailable in some areas due to the power outage, so the principal of each school was given the choice of whether to continue holding classes.

The five school lunch preparation facilities in the city said they could not supply the food because they had no electricity.

The Miyako Minami and Miyako Nishisato stores of the MaxValu supermarket chain were temporarily closed.

Miyako Airport officials said the facility is using its own power generators, and there have been no problems with aircraft takeoffs and landings.
