The Imperial Household Agency is moving into the 21st century in public relations, announcing on March 25 an official Instagram account to share photos and videos of the emperor's and empress's activities.
The launch, scheduled for April 1, will mark the first time that the agency will use social media for public relations purposes. It is also considering utilizing Facebook and X, formerly Twitter, in the future.
The account name will be “宮内庁/Imperial Household Agency” and the username will be “kunaicho_jp”, according to the agency.
The first posts will feature the couple’s engagements from January to March, as well as showcasing the nature and traditional culture offerings at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo.
The agency established a new public relations office in April to share more news and information about the imperial family with the public, particularly online.
Its official Instagram account will be managed by the office and there are no plans for members of the imperial family to post on the account at their own volition.
The agency will consider proposals from foreign royal families to follow each other’s Instagram accounts.
