SAPPORO--Two people believed to be foreign nationals were killed in an avalanche on Mount Yoteizan in Kutchan, Hokkaido, on March 11 while backcountry skiing, according to Hokkaido police and fire departments.
The fire department received a call at around 11 a.m.
Three people were caught in the avalanche including a man in his 30s and a woman in her 20s who were taken to a hospital in an unconscious state and confirmed dead. Another man reportedly injured his shoulder.
A total of six people were backcountry skiing when the avalanche occurred on the mountain. The site is about 50 km southwest of Sapporo.
On the same day around 12:40 p.m. at Mount Iwaonupuri, about 15 km northwest of Mount Yoteizan, a man on the mountain called 119 to report that he had been caught in an avalanche while skiing.
According to the Hokkaido police and fire department, the man, believed to be a foreign national, suffered an injury to his leg. He is said to be conscious.
