Hayao Miyazaki’s “The Boy and the Heron” won the Best Character Animation and the Best Storyboarding awards at the 51st Annie Awards, often referred to as “the Oscars” of the animation world.

The awards were announced on Feb. 17.

The Studio Ghibli icon’s first feature in 10 years was nominated in seven categories, including Best Feature. However, the Best Feature award went to “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.”

The two films will square off again at the 96th Academy Awards in March, as both “Spider-Man” and “The Boy and the Heron” are nominated in the Best Animated Feature Film category.

At the Annie Awards, Joe Hisaishi, who has composed music for Studio Ghibli works including “The Boy and the Heron,” was awarded the Winsor McCay Award for his lifetime contributions to the animation industry.

Japanese filmmaker Makoto Shinkai’s “Suzume” was also nominated in seven categories but went home empty-handed.
