A gunman was holed up in a post office in Warabi, Saitama Prefecture, after two people were shot at a hospital in nearby Toda on Oct. 31, police sources said.
Two female employees, one in her 20s and the other in her 30s, were inside the post office, according to the sources.
The man, who appears to be in his 50s to 70s, reportedly fired a shot after barricading himself in the post office at around 2:15 p.m., the sources said.
The post office is located 1.5 kilometer north from the hospital where the shooting occurred.
At around 1:15 p.m., a person in Toda reported to police: “I heard a loud noise. When I went outside, I saw a person with what looked like a gun riding away on a motorcycle.”
According to Saitama prefectural police, a doctor in his 40s and a patient in his 60s at Todachuo General Hospital were apparently grazed by bullets shot through a window.
They were both conscious, and their injuries are not life-threatening, the sources said.
