The Japan Meteorological Agency lifted all tsunami advisories for areas on the Pacific coast at noon on Oct. 9 but said sea level fluctuations may continue for about half a day.

Tsunami observed by 9:30 a.m. included: 60 cm at Yaene on Hachijojima island; 50 cm at Kozushima Port on Kozushima island and Tsubota on Miyakejima island; 40 cm at Tosa-Shimizu, Kochi Prefecture, and Nakanoshima, Kagoshima Prefecture; and 30 cm at Mera in Tateyama in Chiba Prefecture, as well as Ako on Miyakejima island and Minami-Osumi in Kagoshima Prefecture.

No major damage was immediately reported.

According to the agency, a very shallow earthquake struck at 5:25 a.m. near Torishima island in the Izu island chain about 370 kilometers northwest of Chichijima island.

A tsunami advisory was immediately issued for the Izu and Ogasawara islands.

The agency issued tsunami warnings at 7:52 a.m. for Kujukuri, Sotobo, and Uchibo in Chiba Prefecture, and Kochi Prefecture.

The warnings were extended at 8:24 a.m. for Miyazaki Prefecture, eastern Kagoshima Prefecture, the Tanegashima and Yakushima regions, and the Amami islands and the Tokara islands.
