The season’s first snowcap was observed on Mount Fuji on the morning of Oct. 5, three days later than normal and five days later than last year, the Kofu Local Meteorological Office said.

The weather at the foot of the mountain on Oct. 4 was rainy but snow was falling on the summit.

Clouds blocked the view of the peak early the next day, but at around 7:30 a.m., an employee of the meteorological office about 40 kilometers away visually confirmed the snowcap.

As of 8 a.m., the temperature near the summit was 0.1 degrees below zero, and the area was covered with a light dusting of snow.
