YOKOHAMA--A cyclist believed to be a foreign national died after colliding with a car on the metropolitan expressway here in the early hours of Sept. 25.
The Kanagawa prefectural police are investigating the accident, believing that the cyclist entered the expressway by mistake.
The accident occurred on the Shuto Expressway Yokohane Route bound for Yokohama at around 3:15 a.m. on the day.
The man riding the bike was confirmed dead at a hospital about an hour after the car struck him.
“The bicycle suddenly appeared in front of me, and I couldn’t stop in time,” the 34-year-old male driver of the car told police.
According to police, the car traveling on the Yokohane Route collided with the cyclist, who was coming from the Shuto Expressway Mitsuzawa Route, near the Kinko Junction, where the two routes merge.
The cyclist was riding a road bike and wearing cycling gear. His identification card suggests he was 31 years old and likely a U.S. national.
The bicycle had a sticker from the Cycle Messenger World Championships, an international cycling competition being held in Yokohama, on the handlebar.
The person whose name appears on the I.D. card is entering the competition, according to police.
Following the accident, the area was closed to traffic.
