SHIZUOKA--Work began here July 22 to remove a massive 140-ton bridge girder that fell during construction work, killing two workers and injuring six others.
Traffic around the site has been restricted since the July 6 accident, causing chronic traffic snarls.
The work involves disassembling the 63-meter-long girder into eight blocks and moving the parts to another location. This will give police investigators better access as they try to determine the trigger for the accident.
Damage to the road below caused by the falling girder will have to be repaired before it can be opened to traffic. Officials are hoping to lift the traffic restrictions by mid-August.
Although there are two-lane stretches of road in both directions at the site, one side has been closed to traffic, with one lane each of the other side used for two-way driving.
