More than 7,600 former COVID-19 patients reported experiencing aftereffects to the Tokyo metropolitan government from May 2022 to August 2023, according to the latest statistics.
The symptoms in the 7,632 consultations include fatigue in 2,704 cases, coughing in 2,211 cases, fever and low-grade fever in 1,170 instances, as well as complaints of poor memory and concentration, insomnia and hair loss, with some patients reporting multiple symptoms.
More than 90 percent of those who reported aftereffects had only a mild illness or less severe symptoms at the time of infection.
The metropolitan government reported the data at a meeting of a special committee on new coronavirus countermeasures of the Tokyo metropolitan assembly on Sept. 21.
The metropolitan government has set up a post-coronavirus consultation desk at eight metropolitan and public hospitals.
The number of consultations has fluctuated from month to month.
However, even after the downgrade of COVID-19 to a less-severe Category 5, the same as seasonal flu, consultations have continued to increase, with 255 reports in August, an increase of 105 from the previous month.
On the same day, the Tokyo metropolitan government also announced the status of new COVID-19 cases for the most recent period from Sept. 11 to 17.
The number of patients reported per fixed-point medical institution was 16.04, compared to 16.36 the previous week. Among the figures, the number of cases among teenagers, in particular, is increasing.
