Japan continued to wilt in soaring temperatures as heatstroke alerts were issued for 19 prefectures including some in the Kanto, Hokuriku and Kinki regions.
The Tokyo Fire Department on July 30 reported that it transported 87 people to the hospital with suspected heatstroke. They ranged in age from 4 to 98.
The fire department, which coordinates ambulance movements, urged people to drink water and use air conditioning.
On July 31, a high-pressure system extended across Japan, with cloudless skies adding beauty to the misery.
As of 9:30 a.m. on July 31, the temperature was 34.5 degrees in central Tokyo. It was set to reach 36 degrees later, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.
The JMA said temperatures would hit 38 degrees in Saitama city, 37 degrees in Kofu and Maebashi, 36 degrees in Kyoto and 35 degrees in Osaka and Sendai.
Residents of the 19 prefectures under heat stroke alert were cautioned to stay hydrated. The alerts are issued by the JMA and the Environment Ministry.
