Two passenger jets bumped into each other on the runway of Tokyo’s Haneda Airport, damaging the aircraft but causing no injuries to crew or passengers.
The collision involving Thai Airways International and EVA Air of Taiwan occurred around 11 a.m. on June 10, according to the transport ministry’s Tokyo International Airport office.
The runway was temporarily closed, but operations resumed in the afternoon. Passengers on the two planes were unable to depart for around two hours.
A live camera feed set up at Haneda Airport by The Asahi Shimbun showed the Thai Airways jet passing to the left of the stopped EVA Air plane before it also came to an immediate stop.
A 35-year-old woman from Wakayama Prefecture who was aboard the Thai Airways plane heard a small sound and felt a vibration in the aircraft. When cabin attendants repeatedly looked out the plane window, the passenger did as well.
“I realized a part of the wing had broken off,” the woman said. “I wondered why that would happen before the plane took off.”
She described the vibration as similar to when a car runs over an object on the road.
