Facilities for international flights at Haneda Airport’s Terminal 2 in Tokyo will resume operations on July 19 after long being shut down because of COVID-19 restrictions, the terminal buildings’ operator announced May 22.

The company decided to restart operations at Terminal 2 after three years and three months because Terminal 3, which is for international flights only, has been busy as the lifting of COVID-19 border controls has returned demand for travel to Japan.

Terminal 2 at Haneda Airport used to be for domestic flights only, but new facilities for international flights were added as the airport needed to prepare for the 40 percent increase in international flights leaving and arriving there, which was scheduled for the summer of 2020.

Costs to construct the new facilities were around 62 billion yen ($447 million).

However, as the new facilities at Terminal 2 opened in March 2020, when COVID-19 started spreading and airlines suspended many international flights, they were forced to close just two weeks after opening.

When the facilities reopen in July, All Nippon Airways Co. will start operating five flights per day on four routes to Taipei, Shanghai, Hong Kong and London from Terminal 2.

After that, the number of international flights and their routes flying from, and arriving at, Terminal 2 will gradually increase, according to the terminal buildings’ operator.
