Hitachi Ltd. and Toshiba Corp. will build a new power-efficient train based on the latest Shinkansen model for Taiwan’s high-speed rail network.

The two companies announced on May 18 that they will supply 12 trains, comprising 144 cars, to Taiwan High Speed Rail Corp. from 2026 under a contract worth about 124 billion yen ($900 million).

The train, based on Central Japan Railway Co.’s N700S series, will consume about 20 percent less electricity than Taiwan High Speed Rail’s conventional model as lighter components are used.

Hitachi will manufacture the train body and wheel truck, while Toshiba Infrastructure Systems and Solutions Corp., a Toshiba subsidiary, will be responsible for the motors and other parts.

Taiwan’s high-speed rail network, based on Japan’s Shinkansen system, opened in 2007. It spans about 350 kilometers, linking Taipei with the southern city of Kaohsiung.

In addition to Hitachi and Toshiba, Japanese companies including Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd. and Nippon Sharyo Ltd. have been involved in manufacturing trains and power transformers.
