Three Shinkansen operators will create dedicated spaces for passengers to safely keep suitcases and other large bags on the high-speed trains’ deck areas connecting the cars.
The new offering will start on May 24, Central Japan Railway Co. (JR Tokai), West Japan Railway Co. (JR West) and Kyushu Railway Co. (JR Kyushu) announced on March 28.
Passengers who buy certain reserved seats will be able to use the service at no additional fee. The belongings will be locked in place for security purposes.
The special spaces will be introduced on the decks of five cars of the 16-car bullet trains on the Tokaido Shinkansen and Sanyo Shinkansen lines. The operators will also consider incorporating the storage zones in eight-car trains along the Sanyo Shinkansen and Kyushu Shinkansen lines.
Since May 2020, JR Tokai, JR West and JR Kyushu have offered similar dedicated spaces for large luggage behind the seats at the backs of each car on reserved carriages.
