Rumiko Takahashi, creator of “Urusei Yatsura” and many other popular manga works, has been knighted by the French government.
The Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters) was bestowed on Takahashi on April 6, her publisher, Shogakukan Inc., announced.
“I’d like to express my gratitude for giving me such a great honor,” Takahashi said in a statement. “I am very happy to know that the French people also enjoy my works, which are based on daily lives in Japan. It is encouraging for me to continue to work on manga with all my heart and soul. Thank you.”
The Niigata Prefecture native made her professional debut in 1978.
Her works include “Ranma 1/2” and “Inuyasha,” which are also popular outside Japan.
Other manga artists who have received the honor include Katsuhiro Otomo, Leiji Matsumoto and Akira Toriyama.
Takahashi also won the top Grand Prix award at the prestigious Angouleme International Comics Festival held in France in 2019.
