MAKINOHARA, Shizuoka Prefecture--Police are investigating a 13-year-old girl's involvement in her mother’s death after the woman was found stabbed to death at her home here.
At around 11:50 p.m. on Jan. 16, police received an emergency call reporting that “a family member had been stabbed” at a house in Makinohara, Shizuoka Prefecture.
A woman in her 40s living in the home was taken to a hospital but confirmed dead about an hour and a half later.
Prefectural police took the child into custody and are investigating her on suspicion of stabbing her mother with a knife-like object.
Police also notified the prefecture’s central child consultation center.
The police’s juvenile division has not disclosed the child’s gender or school year, saying that it could lead to identifying the individual.
But a source said the child is the victim’s eldest daughter.
When police officers rushed to the scene, the woman had collapsed in her home, police said.
They said that the woman had multiple stab wounds and the cause of death will be determined by an autopsy.
Soon after the incident, a family member of the woman contacted police, according to police.
In Japan, children under 14 cannot be held criminally liable for their actions under the Juvenile Law.
In general, police notify a child consultation center and the head of the center decides whether to refer the case to a family court.
