SUITA, Osaka Prefecture--The original iconic “Ogon no Kao” Golden Mask that sat atop the Tower of the Sun during the Japan World Exposition 1970 will go on display at a facility scheduled to open in the Expo ’70 Commemorative Park here next August.
It will mark the first time since 1992 for the Golden Mask, which measures 10.6 meters in diameter, to go on permanent exhibition. It was eventually replaced with a second-generation version, which is currently installed, due to rain and wind damage.
The original version will be installed on a wall inside an annex under construction next to the Expo ’70 Pavilion. The facility will also exhibit a model of a Trachodon dinosaur that was on display inside the Tower of the Sun during the Expo and a scale model of the pavilion at the time.
The Tower of the Sun was designed by avant-garde artist Taro Okamoto (1911-1996).
The Golden Mask was made of 340 steel plates coated with gold-color film. After it was replaced with stainless steel version in 1992, the original Golden Mask was dismantled and stored in a warehouse, but was occasionally re-assembled for limited exhibition.
