CHIBA--Prefectural police have identified the body of a young girl found on Oct. 4 on the banks of the Edogawa river as Saya Minami, a 7-year-old who went missing about two weeks ago.
Police conducted DNA analysis and found a match between the body and the parents of the elementary school first-grader.
No one had seen Saya since she left her home in Matsudo, Chiba Prefecture, at about 11:30 a.m. on Sept. 23. Her shoes and socks were found along the Edogawa riverbank near Nagareyama in the prefecture about 14 kilometers upstream from where the body was discovered two days ago.
A police autopsy suggested the young girl may have drowned.
Police found no external injuries on the body.
