LONDON--Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako arrived in mourning outfits and black face masks to join other heads of state and world leaders for the Sept. 19 funeral of Queen Elizabeth II at the capital’s historic Westminster Abbey.

The couple arrived on the evening of Sept. 17 aboard a government plane for their first overseas visit together since Naruhito and Masako became emperor and empress in 2019.

Waiting officials greeted the couple at Stansted Airport on the outskirts of London ahead of the drive to their hotel in the capital.

The emperor and empress waved when a crowd outside their hotel called out to the pair.

Their previous foreign trip together was in July 2015, when they visited Tonga, a Polynesian island nation in the South Pacific.
