The number of COVID-19-related deaths across Japan on Aug. 23 reached 343 amid the seventh wave of infections, surpassing the previous record of 327 set on Feb. 22 during the sixth wave.
It was the third time for the daily death toll to top 300 and the first since Aug. 16.
Forty-two of the deaths on Aug. 23 were reported in Osaka Prefecture, followed by 25 each in Tokyo and Kanagawa Prefecture, and 19 each in Saitama and Fukuoka prefectures.
According to preliminary figures released by the health ministry as of Aug. 16, 60 percent of Japan’s 35,394 deaths during the pandemic were people in their 80s or older, while 20 percent were in their 70s.
