The number of new COVID-19 cases in Tokyo declined week on week, but as of 6 p.m., at least five other prefectures reported record daily figures for infections on Aug. 11.
Yamagata, Ishikawa, Hyogo, Hiroshima and Nagasaki prefectures each had their highest totals for new COVID-19 cases.
The previous day, on Aug. 10, daily tally records were broken in 20 prefectures. That day, a record-high 250,403 fresh COVID-19 cases were reported around the nation.
Tokyo metropolitan government officials reported 31,247 new cases in the capital on Aug. 11, a decrease of 4,092 over the previous Thursday.
But 22 deaths were linked to COVID-19, the officials said.
The daily average of cases in Tokyo for the week ending Aug. 11 was 29,648.4, or 90.7 percent of the average for the previous week.
There were 5,663 COVID-19 patients in Tokyo in their 30s, 5,616 in their 20s, 5,462 in their 40s, 4,228 in their 50s, and 3,268 patients aged 65 or older.
