Tokyo metropolitan government officials reported 6,776 new COVID-19 cases on April 20, down 1,477 from the previous Wednesday.

It marked the ninth consecutive day that cases dropped from the same day of the previous week in the capital.

The seven-day average of new cases in Tokyo over the week through April 20 stood at 6,166.1, or 81.9 percent of the average for the preceding week.

The metropolitan government also reported five deaths of COVID-19 patients--a man in his 30s, a man in his 60s, two men in their 80s and one woman in her 90s.

Of the new cases, those under 10 formed the largest age group at 1,316. They were followed by 1,227 patients in their 30s, 1,150 in their 20s, 1,031 in their 40s, 954 aged between 10 and 19, and 562 in their 50s. Additionally, 386 people aged 65 or older tested positive.

The occupancy rate of hospital beds for COVID-19 patients in Tokyo was 24.2 percent, while 5.3 percent of hospital beds for severely ill patients were filled, officials said.

The metropolitan government said it would consider asking the central government to issue another state of emergency for Tokyo if the occupancy rate of beds for seriously ill patients hits between 30 and 40 percent.

The Tokyo metropolitan government defines seriously ill patients as those requiring ventilators or ECMO lung bypass machines.

The number of seriously ill patients remained at 15, the same as the previous day.
