Tokyo confirmed 3,479 new COVID-19 cases on April 18, down 1,083 from the previous Monday, while Osaka Prefecture reported cases dropping under 1,000 for the first time in a month.
In Tokyo, it was the seventh straight day the number of new infections dropped from the same day of the previous week in the capital, metropolitan government officials reported.
The daily average of new cases during the week ending April 17 in Tokyo was 6,568.4, which was 86.5 percent of the average of the previous week.
Metropolitan officials also confirmed three deaths that day, all men aged between 70 and 99.
Among the latest cases in Tokyo, 694 patients were in their 20s, 641 in their 30s, 561 in their 40s, 543 under 10, 472 between the ages of 10 and 19 and 316 in their 50s. Officials said 183 patients were aged 65 or older.
Osaka prefectural officials on April 18 confirmed 951 new cases. It marked the first time the daily figure in the prefecture fell under 1,000 since March 22, when 998 new cases were confirmed.
