Tokyo reported 7,844 fresh cases of COVID-19 on March 27 as well as nine related deaths. The tally of new cases was 1,342 more than the previous Sunday.
The seven-day average of new cases over the week through March 27 came to 6,466.6, or 85.2 percent of the figure for the preceding week, metropolitan health officials said.
Of the new cases, children under the age of 10 formed the largest group of patients, at 1,511.
The nine fatalities the same day involved patients in their 50s through 90s.
On March 26, the nationwide single-day tally of new cases came to 47,338, or 2,638 more than the previous Saturday.
It marked the first time since March 3 for the daily count to surpass the number of the same day a week earlier.
On March 26, there were 101 related deaths around the nation, topping 100 for the fourth straight day.
