When a natural disaster strikes close to home, those wondering whether to evacuate can now call up a special app that provides real-time and on-the-spot information from those on the ground.

Yahoo Japan Corp. announced on Jan. 11 the launch of a new service offering users photos, videos and other information on disaster-related damage in their neighborhoods obtained from tweets.

The service is provided as a new feature on Yahoo Japan’s free Disaster Alert smartphone app. It is aimed at helping users evacuate smoothly in the event of an earthquake, a typhoon, heavy snow or other type of natural disaster.

Under the new service, disaster-hit areas are pinpointed by obtaining data from related tweets that contain location information. Users can see the posted data on disaster-related damage near their current location on the app’s map.
