Asics Corp. and Casio Computer Co. have teamed up to improve the jogging and training styles of runners of all levels.
The companies said a special app combined with a sensor device will analyze users’ running styles and offer advice on enhancing their techniques.
The pair released the free Runmetrix app for smartphones on Jan. 27. Casio’ sensor device, designed to be worn around the waist with a rubber band or by other means, is scheduled for release in March.
After collecting information on body movements and locations, the sensor will evaluate the runner in such categories as the angle of the body trunk and the swing of the pelvis. Practice programs and muscle training methods will be suggested on the app to fit the user’s purpose for running.
Casio’s G-Shock watch can also be connected to the system, making it possible to detect and notify the user of instability in running form, according to the companies.
The sensor unit and a G-Shock watch together will carry a price tag of 57,200 yen ($548) after tax. The sensor alone will cost 14,080 yen. Both the set and sensor will be available on March 4.
Asics and Casio said they are considering establishing a joint company this year to promote the service. They are eyeing sales of around 10 billion yen and 5 million registered users of the app in five years.
