NAHA--Okinawa continued reporting more daily COVID-19 cases than any other prefecture on Jan. 4.
Prefectural health authorities confirmed 225 new cases, excluding U.S. military personnel stationed in the southernmost prefecture.
Officials also said the daily count of new cases among U.S. military personnel for the same day came to 164, adding to the tally of 832 among U.S. service members at nine bases by Jan. 3.
The number of islanders who contracted the Omicron variant had totaled 88 by Jan. 3, indicating the spread of community infections, officials added.
The prefecture’s first case of infection with Omicron involved an Okinawan man working at a U.S. base.
