Tokyo confirmed 40 fresh cases of COVID-19 on Dec. 22, the highest daily tally in the capital since Oct. 16 when there were 65.
The new figure, up 11 from Wednesday last week, brought the daily average of new cases over the week through Dec. 22 to 28.6, or 148.2 percent of the figure for the preceding week.
Metropolitan government officials also announced the death of a man from COVID-19 who was in his 60s.
The number of patients with serious symptoms who require special breathing equipment stood at three, unchanged from the previous day.
