A major pileup involving dozens of vehicles that occurred during the morning rush hour on Dec. 10 injured 12 people and snarled traffic in Komaki, Aichi Prefecture.

The crash occurred on Route 41 about 1 kilometer southwest of the Komaki city hall. The road has three lanes in each direction.

“It was an unbelievable accident and just shocking," said a 61-year-old man who was working in an office in front of the crash site and helped the injured.

At around 8:40 a.m. on Dec. 10, a trailer heading north in the middle lane rear-ended a line of cars backed up on the road, triggering a chain-reaction crash, Aichi prefectural police's Komaki police station said.

Twenty-four vehicles were involved.

The city’s fire department said 12 people were rushed to hospitals. No injuries were life-threatening.

Traffic on Route 41 was closed off for about four and a half hours.

The pileup has caused major traffic congestion even to nearby roads. Nagoya Expressway’s Komaki Route, which runs above Route 41, was backed up as well.
