Tokyo confirmed 17 fresh cases of COVID-19 on Dec. 9, up six from a week ago, as well as the related death of a patient in her 80s.

The latest tally brought the daily average of new cases in the capital over the week through Dec. 9 to 16.7, or 111.3 percent of the figure for the preceding week.

The number of serious cases in the capital requiring ventilators or extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, also known as an ECMO lung bypass machine, remained unchanged from the previous day at three.
