The main opposition Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan accepted the resignation of Yukio Edano as party leader on Nov. 12 and will hold an election on Nov. 30 to pick his replacement.

The election will be open to all current CDP lawmakers, those planning to run in the 2022 Upper House election as well as local assembly members and party supporters.

Edano, who led the opposition party for four years since 2017, stepped down to take responsibility for the CDP’s lost seats in the Oct. 31 Lower House election.

His successor will have to rebuild the party ahead of the Upper House election next summer.

No one has yet formally announced their intention to run. A candidate will need the backing of 20 CDP Diet members to enter the race.
