Fresh cases of novel coronavirus infection in Tokyo continued to stay below 100 for the ninth straight day Oct. 17, but authorities also reported six deaths from COVID-19.
The latest tally for infections, 40, brought the daily average of new cases for the week ending Oct. 17 to 60.4, or 52.7 percent of the figure for the previous week, metropolitan government officials said.
Of the latest cases, eight patients were in their 20s, seven in their 30s and five in their 40s. Five patients were aged 10 or younger, the same number as those aged 65 or older.
Thirty-five patients had symptoms serious enough to require the use of a ventilator or extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, also known as an ECMO lung bypass machine, to breathe. The figure remained the same from the previous day.
