Tokyo reported 87 new COVID-19 cases on Oct. 4, the first time its daily count fell below 100 since Nov. 2, 2020.
The tally brought the capital’s daily average of new infections over the week through Oct. 4 to 196.7, or 57.6 percent of the figure for the preceding week.
Metropolitan government officials also reported six deaths among patients in their 50s to 90s.
The number of serious cases in Tokyo requiring ventilators or extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, also known as an ECMO lung bypass machine, fell by 11 from the previous day to 77.
Of the 87 new cases, 24 patients were in their 20s, followed by 17 in their 40s, 13 in their 30s, 11 in their 60s and 10 in their 50s. There were also 10 patients aged 65 or older.
