NAGOYA--A special art exhibition here boasts some 80 picture plates, ashtrays and decorative ceramic ware featuring vignettes of famous sightseeing spots from around the world.

Rendered in vivid colors, the painted scenes include London, Paris, Rome and New York.

"With national parks across the United States also featured, they were produced in so many varieties that just looking at the picture plates almost feels like taking a trip around the world," said curator Ai Shimamoto.

Many ceramic souvenirs sold at sightseeing spots in the United States and European countries from the 1950s through the 1970s were domestically produced crafts exported from Nagoya.

Painters based their work on photos sent in from those far-off overseas places, according to Nagoya Ceramics Hall, organizer of the exhibition. They would paint the scenes and then transfer the images to the plates.

The exhibits are from the collection of Kosaku Mori, who lives in Kasugai in Aichi Prefecture.

The exhibit is being held at the Nagoya Ceramics Hall in the city's Higashi Ward and runs until Oct. 22. Admission is free.
