Tokyo confirmed 782 new cases of COVID-19 on Sept. 17, down 460 from a week ago. It also reported 25 deaths.

This marks the 26th consecutive day that the number of new infections in the capital has declined compared to the same day a week earlier.

The tally brought the daily average of new infections in Tokyo over the week through Sept. 17 to 945.7, or 57.2 percent of the preceding week. It dropped below 1,000 for the first time since July 16, when the figure was 946.3 cases.

The average number of diagnostic tests conducted in the capital over the three days through Sept. 16 stood at 9,795.3.
